The Rector of the University of Nicosia, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, participated in the official ceremony held at the historic University of Salamanca in Spain on 18 September 2018 and signed the Magna Charta Universitatum.

The Magna Charta Universitatum, jointly created by the European Union of Universities (EUA) and the University of Bologna, is an institutional guardian of the university's governing authorities, focusing on teaching and research and linking the University with society so that universities to become a place of excellence, with a focus and compass on academic freedom and autonomy.

Rector Pouyioutas, said he was very proud to have participated in this ceremony, as this sign confirms the commitment of the University of Nicosia to global academic principles and values that are not limited to academic freedom and autonomy but include, among other things, transparency, meritocracy , inclusion, acceptance of diversity, multiculturalism and solidarity between colleagues.

The inclusion of the University of Nicosia in the network of universities that have signed the Magna Charta Universitatum is yet another guarantee for the preservation of its academic culture.

It is noted that participation in this network was made after a thorough assessment of the University in relation to the mechanisms and procedures of internal governance, quality assurance and the safeguarding of academic freedom and autonomy in teaching, research and engagement with society.
