Distinction of the Department of Nursing (CUT) at the Academic Ranking of World Universities

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), known as the Shanghai List, announced the individual rankings for 2018 of the Universities for each wider scientific area and for special academic subjects. This ranking was created and maintained by Shanghai Jiaotong University (http://www.shanghairanking.com/Shanghairanking-Subject-Rankings/nursing.html).

The classification of the universities is divided into 5 scientific categories (science, engineering, health sciences, humanities and social sciences) and 54 academic subjects, depending on the specialization of their scientific object. Altogether 4,000 academic institutions were evaluated than the 20,000 worldwide.

The Department of Nursing of CUT

  • is ranked 101-150

  • is the only Nursing Department in the ranking list from Cyprus and the second only in the Greek-speaking world (with Kapodistrian University of Athens being ranked 76-100)

  • according to the list, is ranked in position 35 between European universities (and Kapodistrian University of Athens at position 29), 9 of which in Scandinavia, 8 in the United Kingdom, 7 in the Netherlands.

It should be noted that in order for a University to be included in the ranking in such an assessment, it should have a minimum number of publications in the period 2011-2015. The threshold varies by academic section and ranges from 25 publications (e.g. communications, public administration) to 200 publications (e.g. physics, biology, chemistry).

The analysis of the publications is based on a model of price and weight performance in 5 indices, from which model is derived the weighted average for each subject and each University separately. For each index, the "best" institution scores 100, so each other institution scores with the percentage that is below the score of the first.

These indicators are as follows:

1. Number of articles published by a University on a specific academic subject (PUB Index).

2. Normalization based on the number of cross-references for each article posted on a specific topic. Measure the mean effect of each article (CNCI Index).

3. Percentage of articles with international collaboration published by a University on a specific topic (IC Index).

4. Number of Professor and Researcher articles published in top academic journals (TOP Index).

5. Total number of University staff who earned an important prize / distinction on an academic subject (AWARD Index).
