Academics of the University of Cyprus among the "Best Minds" of the world

Professor of Cardiology Gerasimos Filippatos and Associate Professor Ioannis Krikidis of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are in the Thomson Reuters Foundation's list of "The Most Important Scientific Thoughts in the World 2017" among the 3500 researchers with the greatest impact worldwide.

Academics from the University of Cyprus co-exist in the list of 3539 "sophisticated" scientists who had the greatest influence worldwide in the past year in 2017, according to the latest annual list produced by Thomson Reuters, "The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds 2017 ". In the list of the world's "best minds", which pioneer in solving the biggest challenges of the world, are the scientists from Cyprus and Greece, members of the University of Cyprus community.

More specifically, the list includes Dean of the Medical School, Professor of Cardiology Gerasimos Filippatos and Associate Professor Ioannis Krikidis of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Cyprus. In this list of scientists, however, should also be included scientists of Cypriot and Greek origin who teach at universities abroad.

A key criterion for Thomson Reuters' selection of academics at the University of Cyprus in that list was the range of their publications and the impact that they had in the scientific community worldwide. Scientists are divided by category, depending on the science and type of their research. Specifically, there are 21 separate domains according to which scientists are categorized and all, as a whole, form the list of over 3,500 "minds" worldwide.

The Dean of the Medical School, Professor of Cardiology, Gerasimos Filippatos, was distinguished in the field of Clinical Medicine and Associate Professor Ioannis Krikidis of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Computer Science field. The magnitude of the academic distinction of the University of Cyprus is also a great honour for Cyprus. It is worth noting that the number of researchers worldwide reaches 9 million, while scientific publications, which are the basis for the award of each one, exceed two million per year.

According to the Thomson Reuters Agency, there is a specific, objective reason behind the annual list formation. A safe criterion, he mentions, is mainly the frequency of use of their research as a source by scientists’ colleagues worldwide. Thomson Reuters 'Highly Cited Researchers' list aims to highlight the most influential scientists and researchers in science and social sciences from around the world and whose authorial research has significantly influenced other researchers in the their sector. The 2017 list emphasizes the contemporary research achievements of "selected" scientists, as it includes research projects ranked in the top 1% with most reports for the period from 2005 to 2015. The scientific "best minds" of the University of Cyprus, included in the research, influence the future direction of their science and the whole world. This is the fourth year that this list is released.

It is noted that Professor of Cardiology, Gerasimos Filippatos, of the University of Cyprus, has been distinguished worldwide in previous years as he was also included in the list of the most influential academics in the world in the years 2015 and 2016, while the Associate Professor Ioannis Krikidis was included for the first time , among the most influential scientists in the world, in 2017, by Thomson Reuters.

The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Constantinos Christofides said: "I warmly congratulate the two colleagues, both Associate Professor Ioannis Krikidis and the Dean of the Medical School, Professor Gerasimos Filippatos. But I cannot dwell on an event that concerns the entire Cypriot society. Mr. Filippatos, Professor of Cardiology is ranked as one of the best scientists in the world. However, the Cypriot State, under pressure from various trade union groups, does not entitle Professor Filippatos to practice his profession at the General Hospital of Nicosia under the modern conditions of other countries within the framework of a University Clinic. Professors and Associate Professors of the Medical School have no independent access to our public hospitals, with the result that the citizens of our country do not have full access to their specialized knowledge and experience.”
