ESSA-Sport European Alliance of Skills in the Field of Sport and Physical Activity

The University of Nicosia, as a partner in the European Observatoire of Sport and Employment (EOSE), participates in the very important Pan-European Survey conducted for Employers in the field of Sport and Physical Activity. The project aims to reshape the future structure of human resources in the field of Sport. The project includes 18 National Partners from EU Member States, as well as 5 European Nets.

The objective of the project is to improve the skills supply in the field. Employers' views are vital to the success of the project and the results of the survey will be used to inform those involved in the field by:

  • 28 national reports and action plans for the sports sector - one for each EU Member State,

  • The first pan-European analysis of employment and skills across the sector and

  • The first EU summit on Sport Skills to be held in 2019.

Research is the second phase of the project. In the first phase, statistics were collected on the contribution of the sport sector to the economy, both at national level for each EU Member State and on the economy of the European Union as a whole. These data will be updated throughout the project and will be combined with the results of the second phase, which is the study of employers' views.

Through the project, it is expected that important data will be produced which will

  • affect the provision of education and training so as to ensure that the Sports sector has the skilled workforce of professionals and volunteers needed to achieve and

  • contribute to shaping employment and career guidance.

The research team of the University of Nicosia, under the guidance of the President of the Council, Professor Nikos Kartakoulis, thanks in advance all the employers of the sports sector who accept to participate in the research.

In the next 2 weeks, those of the employers who have not received an e-mail invitation to participate in the survey but are interested in expressing their views may contact electronically with Christina Loizou, head of research at Cyprus, at email
loizou.c@unic.ac.cy, so that the relevant link is sent to fill in the questionnaire.
