"New Strategic Infrastructure Units-New Scientists"

The University of Cyprus has secured 5 of the 6 projects funded by the Research Promotion Institute "New Strategic Units - Young Scientists" (83%) with a budget of approximately € 3.62 million, 60.3% of the total available budget. In these Scientific Areas, the University of Cyprus submitted a total of 12 proposals, in 3 scientific areas that included the invitation and 5 were approved for funding with a success rate of 41.7%.
 
The Call for Proposals "New Strategic Infrastructure Units - New Scientists" aims to create new distinct research units under the coordination of young scientists who are expected to contribute substantially to raising the level of research in Cyprus, developing new ideas for innovative solutions and products and in the future enhancement of the Competitiveness of the Priority Areas of the Strategic Smart Specialization for Cyprus.
 
According to the Call for Proposals "New Strategic Infrastructure Units - New Scientists", the funded research projects are selected for funding after two evaluation phases. In the First Phase of Scientific Evaluation, each proposal is evaluated remotely by two (2) experts who are experts in the subject of the proposal. In the 2nd Evaluation Phase, the first five (5) proposals with the highest score for each Technological / Scientific Area Group are proceeding, provided that they are eligible for funding.
 
The results of the 2nd Phase of Evaluation of the proposals submitted under the Invitation "New Strategic Infrastructure Units - Young Scientists" concern the Scientific Areas "Information and Communication Technologies", "Mikro-Nano Electronics and Photonics" and "Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials and Advanced Processes and Processes ". It is noted that the 2nd Phase of Assessment for the Scientific Area "Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology", which will take place on 10-11 October 2018, is pending, where 5 projects will be funded with the UCY participating in the process with 9 projects (6 as a Coordinator and 3 as a Partner).
 
It is noted that from the University of Cyprus, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, through its research units, has secured 3 projects, the Physics Department 1 project, and the Department of Chemistry has secured 1 project as a partner. As a result of these excellent results, 4 new research infrastructures / strategic projects will be installed at the University of Cyprus.
